What are Yoga Retreats?

May 19, 2009 | Greg | Comments 0

Yoga retreats are cropping up everywhere. So what the heck are they exactly? Good question! I had always pictured them as mysterious and exotic locations filled with disciples of Yoga Masters following their ‘gurus’ through beautiful gardens and scenic spots soaking up Yoga exercises all day.

Granted, my view was a tad slanted and even a little bit Hollywood affected. Sometimes you develop a silly image of something and so need a little education to replace it with a more appropriate and realistic image.

While there is certainly plenty of teaching going on at Yoga retreats and many of the campuses have beautiful gardens. You don’t exactly have to run off to the most exotic locations in order to become involved in Yoga retreats. The United States offers plenty of them. The campuses are still beautiful and even boast the ever appropriate beautiful meditation garden.

Yoga retreats offer more than just Yoga classes. Depending on which program you decide on you can receive classes on anything from various meditation techniques to health and nutrition to mind-body-spirit connections. Some programs offer massage therapy and naturally based treatments such as mud soaks to improve health and increase focus and relaxation.

Not all Yoga retreats are the same and each one will operate on an individual basis. You can usually find out what the program offers simply by going online and finding the program’s web page. Here, you should be able to find links to their program schedule, find out if the package is all inclusive or if there are additional fees for certain services.

Most people who are just venturing into the idea of Yoga not only ask what are Yoga retreats but also ask are these Yoga retreats helpful? Everyone needs a break every now and then from the everyday stresses, the bills, the family, and the responsibilities that come along with being a human being. Yoga retreats often work well for those who want to make a stronger connection with themselves and become more in touch with the world that surrounds them. Whichever program you go with you can almost always count on the idea that a Yoga retreat will offer you just enough relaxation time while it also offers you a chance to gain perspective on your life.

Yoga retreats are surprisingly not just for those who have had some Yoga experience. Some people head off to such programs because they are interested in learning how to live a much healthier lifestyle. Almost every Yoga retreat will offer the basics to help a new Yoga student learn what is healthy for them, how to achieve good health, and how to maintain good health once they have achieved it.

The overall wellness plan and the interconnection between the mind, body, and spirit are principles which have led people with illness diagnoses, people who are going through severe life changes like a divorce, and people who are realizing that their lifestyle really isn’t working out too well for them. Yoga retreats offer an open door, and open hearts, to anyone who is looking to improve the quality of their health and their lifestyle.
